AN intimate portrait that necessitated unlimited access, Modern Life offers a witness to farmers’ lives, values, family stories and all that binds them to the land.

The film is the result of ten years spent filming the French farming communities of former photographer and director Raymond Depardon’s youth.

He examines their legacies and questions what will become of the farmers and their relatively uncomplicated existence in the face of rapidly advancing modernism.

Disproving the notion that small-scale agriculture is dead, Modern Life is a bewitching and charming documentary.

The film is showing tomorrow and Sunday at Harbour Lights Picturehouse.
