THE candidates vying to become the next crop of Euro MPs for Hampshire have been revealed.

Voters will get to choose ten £63,000-a-year members of the European Parliament to represent the south-east for the next five years.

Fifteen parties have put forward lists of candidates who will be elected by proportional representation, a system which relates to their overall share of the vote across the region.

In 2004, Tories won four seats, Lib Dems and UKIP took two seats each, and Labour and the Greens won one each.

Eurosceptic MEP Daniel Hannan heads the Conservative list for re-election alongside fellow MEPs Richard Ashworth, Nirj Deva, and James Elles.

Liberal Democrats will today launch their south-east campaign in Romsey with a rally and town hall discussion with business leaders. Sharon Bowles is fighting for re-election.

Green Party leader Caroline Lucas will at the same time launch her campaign for re-election in Southampton, joined by fellow candidate, New Forest lawyer Beverley Golden.

The UK Independence Party has already stolen a march on the main other parties with a controversial billboard campaign in Southampton featuring Winston Churchill.

Flamboyant leader Nigel Farage hopes to win three seats this time around, and is offering former top EU accountant and budget whistleblower Marta Andreasen as his number two.

South-east MEP Peter Skinner is fighting to retain Labour’s only seat.

Of the smaller parties, South-ampton Ford worker Kevin Hayes is the fourth choice for the No2EU: Yes to Democracy party. Southampton socialist campaigner Nick Chaffey is also standing for the party.

Paramjit Bahia from South-ampton is the number two pick for the Socialist Labour Party, led by former union boss Arthur Scargill.

Voting takes places on Thursday, June 4 in the UK, when there will also be local elections for all 78 members of Hampshire County Council.

Electors have until Tuesday May 19 to register to vote.

Southampton City Council’s returning officer Mark Heath is overseeing the south-east European election count at St Mary’s Stadium.

He said: “The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy but if you don’t register and obtain a postal or proxy vote if you need one, you lose that right and won’t be able to vote. If you don’t have a vote, you can’t have your say.”
