PROTESTERS took to the streets in an 11th hour bid to stop the axe from falling on a popular Hampshire hospital.
Gosport's Royal Hospital Haslar is due to close this summer.
But angry protestors have not given up their fight to save a much loved community hospital which has also provided vital accident and emergency services. Now residents needing hospital treatment face battling through traffic to get to Portsmouth's Queen Alexandra Hospital.
In brilliant sunshine yesterday they gathered in Nat Gonella Square, Gosport, before setting through the town centre.
The marchers covered all generations from grandparents to children in pushchairs.
Campaigners are demanding the Government reinstate the 250-year-old former military hospital complete with emergency services and operating theatres.
