A GANG left a young man with severe injuries after a robbery in Southampton.

The 21-year-old victim was walking home from the Station pub near Bitterne train station.

As he walked along St Catherine’s Road, Bitterne Park, past the former Spar store on the corner of Bond Road, he was set upon by a group of up to 20 youths.

The knocked him unconscious and took his Samsung mobile phone, iPod Nano, and his wallet which contained £30 cash and some bank cards.

The victim, who was treated at Southampton General Hospital for a suspected fractured cheekbone, remembers being kicked to the head but little else.

Descriptions from the victim and a witness describe the robbers as a group of about 20 white and black males and female youths in their teens. One person was believed to be wearing shorts and a vest.

Officers are now appealing for other witnesses to the incident, which happened between 10.25pm and 10.50pm on Friday.

PC Matt Buck from the Southampton Street Robbery Investigation team, said: “I am appealing for anyone who may have seen this robbery to come forward. I am also asking for anyone within this group who may not have taken part in the robbery to come forward and assist police in identifying those responsible for assaulting the victim who was just walking home after a night out.”
