THEY should have been celebrating the short life of their baby daughter May.
But instead Simon and Samantha Gerrey have been left heartbroken after callous thieves snatched the angelic ornament that lay beside their daughter’s grave, on what would have been her second birthday.
The Southampton couple made the devastating discovery when they visited May’s grave at Hollybrook Cemetery to honour her birthday.
Since losing May two years ago, just two hours after she was born prematurely, the couple frequently visit her grave in the children’s section of the Tremona Road cemetery.
But when they arrived the 15- inch cement figurine of a baby sleeping in angel’s wings was gone and despite a search to find it, it was nowhere to be seen.
Despite the grave being surrounded by flowers and toys, including a Winnie the Pooh snow-globe that Simon bought May at Christmas, only the figurine was stolen.
What has caused even more upset for the grieving parents is knowing that the thief stole the treasured ornament on the morning of May’s birthday, as it was last seen by another parent the night before.
Simon, 34, said: “It is painful enough having to visit her grave on what would have been her second birthday but to go up there and discover someone has stolen her angel is heartbreaking.
“To make things worse the person who has taken it must have seen from the wooden cross that it would have been her second birthday but still went ahead and stole it.”
