A MAN was this morning being questioned on suspicion of rape after an attack in a residential Hampshire street.
Detectives made the arrest after reports of a sex attack at Mill Pond at Holbury in the New Forest.
The incident was reported just after 12pm yesterday after which the area was sealed off while police forensic investigators scoured the scene.
Detectives also carried out house to house inquiries during the course of yesterday afternoon before lifting the cordon around the street late in the afternoon.
As a result of their inquiries a 58-year-old man from Fawley was then arrested on suspicion of rape and this morning remained in police custody.
Detectives leading the investigation are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area around the time of the incident. They particularly want to hear from anyone who saw anyone leaving the area in a hurry and anyone who spotted an unfamiliar car in the area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Lyndhurst CID on 0845 045 4545 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
