A MAN arrested on suspicion of rape has been bailed pending further inquiries.
The 58-year-old from Fawley was detained after a woman was attacked in a road called The Mill Pond in Holbury on Wednesday.
Officers attached to the Major Crime Unit at Hulse Road police station in Southampton are investigating the incident.
Chief Inspector Gary Cooper, of New Forest police, said: "This appears to be a random attack by an opportunist who took advantage of a vulnerable person.
"It is an unusual incident and women should not unnecessarily worry but should be aware of their personal safety and report anyone acting suspiciously."
Police are planning to maintain a higher profile in the area in a bid to reassure residents.
Chief Inspector Cooper added: "Officers will be conducting additional patrols over the next few days and are available at Hythe police station should anyone living locally have any concerns or require advice."
The man arrested has been bailed until August 19.
Anyone with information about the incident should call the major crime unit on 0845 045 4545 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
