AND to think we only went to watch a couple of frames of snooker and a few hands of cribbage...

Following the highly-successful ‘Woman of the Year’ award a couple of weeks ago, it’s time to reveal the men who impressed us the most during our tour of the Southampton & District Social Clubs League this season.

In fifth place were C-siders Terry Kitcher and Dave Riley who have been cribbage team-mates at St Denys Cons C for 44 years.

In fourth was 79-year-old WPBSA referee Peter Marchi who once beat Dennis Taylor in a tap-dancing contest.

In third was 86-year-old Albert Burkill who can only play away cribbage matches for Ford Sports, which is set back a long way from the road.

His feet were mangled by a German mortar in a trench in Dunkirk during the Second World War.

Runner-up was Martin Jackson who scored a century (110) for Northam at Bishops Waltham five years after being blinded in his left eye.

But our ‘Man of the Season’ is Rex Batten, 79, who couldn’t believe that anyone would be interested in him.

Rex used to work all day Friday and all night at Husband’s Shipyard in Marchwood to be allowed Saturdays off to play football.

He once fell asleep during half-time in an FA Cup match at Newport, IoW.
