THOUSANDS of rail fans are expected to invade Eastleigh today for what is being billed as one of the biggest rail events of the year.
The three-day Eastleigh 100 marks the centenary of the giant railway works opening. The plant, which closed four years ago, was for many decades was the economic lifeblood of the town. Now those people who mourned its passing will be able to celebrate its proud past.
Organisers are expecting such a huge influx of visitors that they are advising people to travel by rail. There will park-and-ride buses throughout the event from Eastleigh Civic Offices in Leigh Road, Tower Lane, off Chickenhall Lane and the amphitheatre at Lakeside Country Park, off Wide Lane.
Parking will be free in the town centre on the Sunday and Monday with exception of the Swan Centre rooftop car park.
Railway fanatic and pop Svengali Pete Waterman will give a VIP opening to Eastleigh 100 at 11am.
