THEY are works of art any rock fan would be proud to hang on their wall.

Twenty-five paintings of seminal band The Who, commissioned by guitarist Pete Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey, are coming up for sale and could fetch a total of £200,000.

The collection was left to Hampshire man Paul Kelly by the artist, his best friend John Davis who was killed in a car crash three years ago.

Now Mr Kelly, 45, from Hedge End, is to sell them after he has put them on display. He has not yet decided where the works will be shown or sold.

Mr Davis was commissioned to produce the paintings for a book, A Decade of The Who.

Mr Kelly, who met the artist in 1991 at a Roman History Society re-enactment in Fordingbridge, said: “I didn’t know John had written out a will and I inherited virtually everything he owned including the original art work from the book.

“He was very close friends with Roger Daltrey and they would meet up all the time.

“In 2000 John took me to see The Who at Wembley and we had VIP tickets.

I ended up drinking tea with Roger in his changing room after the gig talking about freshwater fishing and I remember thinking you can’t beat this.

“It’s nice to have the paintings here and I could put them on the walls. But not being a true Who fan I think John would have liked them to go to the fans.”
