FRUIT flies and a popular spice used in Indian cooking could hold the key to curing Alzheimer’s, Southampton scientists are hoping to prove.
The University of Southampton’s school of biological sciences plans to use the insects to study an abnormal protein in the brain regions that control memory, but funding is needed to enable the work to continue.
Dr Amrit Mudher wants to examine whether various potential drugs can counteract the harmful effects of the protein.
One of the drugs she will use is curcumin – the main ingredient in the spice turmeric.
