Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp was questioned by police as ''a mere formality'' as part of the investigation into alleged corruption in English football, the club said today.
It is understood the 62-year-old was questioned by City of London Police officers and tax investigators.
The long-running investigation has focused on a number of transfer deals at Redknapp's former club Portsmouth and at Birmingham City.
A spokesman for Spurs said: ''It was a mere formality in respect of next stage information relating to a tax issue.''
Both City of London Police and HM Revenue and Customs refused to comment.
Last May, Redknapp and his wife were awarded £1,000 damages against the City of London Police after High Court judges held that officers who raided their home as part of the inquiry were acting unlawfully.
Redknapp spoke at the time of his ''bitter disappointment'' at the way the arrest was handled, saying he believed he had only been arrested because he was a ''high-profile'' figure.
Other figures who remain on bail in connection with the corruption probe are believed to include Birmingham City managing director Karren Brady, the club's co-owner David Sullivan, Portsmouth's chief executive Peter Storrie, former chairman Milan Mandaric, former player Amdy Faye and agent Willie McKay.
