Prime Minister Gordon Brown today launched a major Cabinet reshuffle after two of his top ministers quit in just 12 hours.
The shake up comes as Defence Secretary John Hutton announced this morning he is standing down as an MP.
The move comes after Works and Pensions minister James Purnell quit last night and launched a stinging attack on the Prime Minister.
That brings the number of cabinet ministers to quit this week to four and has sparked the reshuffle.
Communities secretary Hazel Blears and Home Secretary Jacqui Smith both resigned earlier this week.
In the reshuffle Alan Johnson moves to become the new Home Secretary from the Department of Health.
There is also rising speculation that Southampton Itchen MP John Denham may take over the role as Communities Secretary.
Chancellor Alistair Darling is expected to remain in post as is Foreign Secretary David Miliband.
Lord Mandelson is expected to stay on as Business Secretary, and have responsibility for science added to his portfolio.
Mr Miliband said of James Purnell's resignation as Work and Pensions Secretary: ''He is obviously a big and serious person and I think it is a loss to Government. However, I don't share the judgment that he made.
''I have a different position, I think the voices that we need to listen too are the voices of people who depend on a strong and effective and progressive Labour Government.
''I think we need to listen to the voices of people who are going out to work today, who are looking after their kids, who are worried about care for their parents.
''So today is a day for working not resigning and that is what I am going to do.''
