TODAY is set to be an historic date in the history of Hampshire police as its 2,500 frontline officers move into a comfy new all-black uniform.
From 7am, the white uniform shirt and tie will no longer be worn by any officer who is out policing the streets - just a handful of people with office-based jobs.
Instead police officers will wear a cycling-style black top with a zip at the front which is designed to be more durable and wicks away sweat. New black poly-cotton trousers have also been bought in.
The force has rolled out the new kit, which is easier to launder, after undergoing a trial run.
