THEY are a British institution that only comes around once a year.
Now a campaign has been launched to make sure children across the country enjoy the festive treat of going to a pantomime.
Launched by Robinsons, the fruit drink, families are being urged to spend more time together this Christmas – and what better way than a bit of panto fun.
And there is no shortage in Hampshire with a host of festive shows being staged.
In Southampton, Santa Claus and the Return of Jack Frost is being staged at The Mayflower featuring Roy Barraclough and Stephen Mulhern, while Fernham Hall hosts a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, starring Sue Holderness.
In Portsmouth, The Kings Theatre is staging Aladdin while the magical adventure of The Wizard of Oz is this year’s Christmas show at Theatre Royal Winchester.
Families are also being urged to stage their own productions at home and a website has been set up with lots of hints and tips on how to make your own production, in the comfort of your living room.
The national campaign is being backed by actress Kara Tointon, who is playing Snow White, with boyfriend Joe Swash as Prince Charming, in pantomime at the Bristol Hippodrome.
“I did a pantomime when I was about 11 with Linda Lusardi playing Snow White, and now I'm playing Snow White. I never thought that would happen!” she said.
