HAMPSHIRE residents are being encouraged to put their unwanted Christmas presents to good use by donating them to charity shops.

The British Heart Foundation is appealing for goods to restock the shelves of its stores across the county, after a 20 per cent drop in donated goods over the last 12 months.

At the same time, its charity shops have been busier than ever, raising £15m nationally last year, and bosses want people not to hold on to items they will never use.

Diane Locke, BHF shops’ deputy retail director, said: “With Christmas and the New Year being the busiest time of the calendar for us, we urgently need donations to fill our shelves.

“The Christmas break offers a perfect opportunity to have a clear-out to make room for new gifts and to donate any unwanted items that won’t be used. By donating unwanted Christmas gifts, not only are people keeping their homes clutter free, but they are also helping to save lives.”

As well as taking clothing, accessories, books, CDs and DVDs, BHF’s store in Queensway, Southampton, accepts furniture and electrical goods.
