HUGE concrete slabs crashed to the ground near workers at the Rose Bowl just days after a young dad was killed in an industrial accident.
The giant blocks, which measure 4m x 4m and can weigh up to five tonnes, went down “like a pack of cards”, according to an eyewitness at the home of Hampshire cricket.
It happened just two days after the death of Philip Carsley, 34, who died on his first day at the West End site.
Now one construction worker is so worried he has spoken out to the Daily Echo.
The man, who asked not to be named, said: “We’re all feeling really nervous working on the site now.
“I’m worried about losing my job but I felt I had to come forward out of respect for Phil and his wife and kids.
“His death has deeply moved everyone on the site.
“These blocks just toppled over like a pack of cards or dominoes, ripping the bolts out of the ground. Something needs to be done.”
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) confirmed reports that two more concrete blocks collapsed yesterday.
Hampshire police and the HSE are already investigating Mr Carsley’s death on Monday.
Workers told this newspaper that he died when two concrete blocks, used as part of the new spectator stand, crushed him.
The pitch was sealed off as investigators started to examine the scene.
Yesterday Mr Carsley’s relatives in Yorkshire paid tribute to “a family man who was loved by everyone”.
The Rose Bowl development has been under the spotlight since last year when funding for the project fell through and Eastleigh Borough Council agreed to bail it out by spending £32.2m building a 175-bedroom hotel.
Rival hoteliers have launched a judicial review to block the authority’s involvement, saying the council has no right to “gamble with taxpayers’ money”.
No one at the Rose Bowl was available for comment.
