CAMPAIGNERS are calling for a public meeting to voice their opposition over plans to close vital respite care for vulnerable people.

Plans are being tabled to close down the dedicated Westminster House centre in Newport on the Isle of Wight.

The centre offers respite care for people with learning difficulties and support for their families.

Plans to close the centre are part of a £1m cost-cutting exercise in care services by Isle of Wight Council, which runs the facility.

It is one of a number of proposals to cut costs as part of the annual budget setting and was agreed by the Cabinet this week despite scores of residents turning out to protest.

The final decision will now be made at a full council meeting later this month but campaigners have urged councillors to hold talks or stage a public meeting in the meantime to gauge public outrage over the move.
