After the match Saints fans had their say.

Edward Horbus, 19, Somers Close, Winchester, said: “I thought we played quite well against a Premier league team in the first half but that doesn’t always give you enough to win.”

Mark Langridge, 22, Blackfield, said: “I think Pompey played well as a Saints fan. I hope Pompey survive as I want to play them again and do a lot better next time.”

Andy Cuddy, 42, Verwood, said: “I thought Saints were the better team until the last quarter of the game. In the first half we should have been one or two up.”

Steven Whyte, 25, from Woolston, Southampton, said: “I thought we did pretty well in the first half. It was David James that kept them in it but in the last 20 minutes we had problems in defence.”

Mike Whyte, 23, Butts Close, Sholing, said: “We did well but then threw it all away. We couldn’t cope with the attacks and just fell asleep.”

David Furnell, 47, from Cranberry Terrace, Southampton said: “I thought Saints did well for about 70 minutes and until then they were much the better team but then we lost it.”

Stuart Williams, 27, Beachwood Rise, West End, said: “We should have been 3-0 up in the fist half but then we ran out of steam at the end and just died. The score is not a fair reflection on the match.”

Barry Jenkins, 61, Lancaster Close, Lee on the Solent, said: “It was a good game. Southampton played well particularly Lallana who ran his heart out and the score flattered Pompey.”

His wife Angela, 45, said: :”Obviously I’m very disappointed because Saints deserved better, but they are still going to Wembley for the JPT and Portsmouth aren’t there yet.”

Jon Gardner, 38, Canada Road, Woolston, said: “The Saints did as good as they could given they are two tiers below and they made a fight of it but it is still the last ball that Pompey will ever kick.”
