MORE than twenty patients have been struck down by a winter vomiting bug which has swept through five Hampshire hospital wards.

Three wards were closed at Southampton General Hospital today following an outbreak of Norovirus while two more were closed because of diarrhoea and vomiting.

A hospital spokesman said 24 patients and three staff members had shown symptoms.

People who have been ill are now being reminded to stay away from the hospital for 72 hours, while staff and visitors are being reminded to wash hands regularly and follow strict hygiene routines.

Judy Gillow, director of nursing, said: “This time of year generally tends to bring a rise in cases of viral bugs and we currently have four wards closed due to outbreaks of diarrhoea and vomiting.

“But by following the restrictions we have set out, our visitors can play a major part in helping to prevent further spread of viruses.”

Members of the public intending to visit wards that are still open are asked to help with prevention by observing the following restrictions:

· Avoid visiting if you are feeling unwell or have suffered any symptoms of either sickness or diarrhoea in the last 72 hours.

· Wash hands carefully both before and after visiting a clinical ward area and use the alcohol gels available.

· Do not sit on the bed of the person you are visiting and ask a member of staff if you need more chairs.

· Avoid bringing food in as a gift, and if this is essential ensure it is covered or wrapped.

· Avoid bringing in flowers and plants, which can cause clutter and prevent effective cleaning.

· Adhere to visiting hours, as this will allow time for essential cleaning to occur.
