FIREFIGHTERS raced against the clock to extinguish a fire that threatened to explode out of control.
Crews from Fareham fire station had to act quickly to get the blaze at a garage in Highfield Road under control, before two gas cylinders inside exploded.
The single storey garage at the back of a house, which also contained a car, was engulfed in flames when they arrived at 9pm, last night.
Firefighters successfully managed to cool the Calor cylinders before they caught fire.
It took the crews half an hour to get the fire under control and an hour to dampen it down.
The fire is not being treated as suspicious. It is believed the fire started when the owner was working on the car inside. No one was injured.
