MORE than two-dozen people have been hit by a vomiting bug at Winchester hospital forcing the closure of two wards.

The Norovirus outbreak has "spread to a number of beds and wards" at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, according to a spokeswoman.

The hospital is urging visitors to be "scrupulous with their hand hygiene" and only visit the Romsey Road site if they are free from infectious illness.

A trust spokeswoman said: "The current outbreak is a natural but regrettable consequence of an outbreak in the community."

Dr Matthew Dryden, a consultant microbiologist, said: "We would like people to try to manage their symptoms at home where possible.

"Drinking plenty of fluids helps the body remain hydrated and also speeds the infection through the system. Most cases settle within 48 hours.

"Where possible, it is far better for people to stay out of hospital, manage their symptoms and limit their contact with others.

"If symptoms worsen, we suggest they call NHS Direct or their GP before attending A&E, which is intended to treat only those patients who require urgent and emergency medical attention."

The hospital issued the following hygiene advice to help prevent the condition: - Really thorough hand washing with soap and water, including backs of the hands, between the fingers and followed by thorough drying.

- Cleaning door handles and toilet flush buttons or handles after use.

- If possible, using a different toilet from other people in the household - Using different towels from other members of the family.
