A HAMPSHIRE doctor who joined the relief effort after the devastating earthquake in Haiti said his experiences would help him better deal with emergencies across the county.
Dr Nick Maskery said his ten days in the stricken Caribbean country not only gave him immense satisfaction but also valuable experience for helping people in confined spaces.
“This has given me huge amounts of experience,” said Dr Maskery who works as a consultant at Southampton General Hospital’s emergency department.
“It’s hard to describe what it was like – the sights, sounds and smells. It was pretty grim and chaotic.”
Dr Maskery was attached to the UK International Search and Rescue Team and assigned to search an area of the capital, Port au Prince.
He and his team helped nearly 30 people who had been buried by the rubble.
Last month’s earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, killed 200,000 people.
