Olympic diver Blake Aldridge, who was based in Southampton, has been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and attacking a supermarket security guard.
Aldridge, 27, has been bailed to mid-March while further inquiries are made into the incident in the early hours of Friday at the Tesco in Croydon Road, Beckenham, south east London.
Police were alerted to calls of a ''shoplifter causing a disturbance'' at 2.30am, Scotland Yard said.
A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm to a male security guard and shoplifting bottles of wine.
The other alleged suspect had already left by the time officers arrived at the store, police said.
Aldridge partnered Tom Daley at the 2008 Beijing Olympics coming eighth in the ten-metre synchronised dive.
Aldridge made a mobile phone call midway through the final and then blamed Daley's nerves for the pair's placing. They parted company in March last year.
