Hampshire free range pig farmer Martin Martindale of Greenfield Pork Products has been awarded Supreme Champion of The 2010 Great Hampshire, Sausage, Pie and Ready Meal Competition for his pork, goat’s cheese and watercress sausage.
Greenfield Pork Products from Andover fought off stiff competition at this annual county competition organised by county food group Hampshire Fare.
The competition, held at Sparsholt College, attracted 197 individual entries from 28 Hampshire butchers and meat farmers. Judges awarded 71 gold certificates and 15 trophies.
In addition to winning Supreme Champion, Martin scooped champion trophies for Best Hampshire Sausage, Best Speciality Pork Sausage, Best Traditional Pork Sausage and Best Hampshire Farmers’ Market Entry.
Upon receiving his trophy, Martin said: “Winning this has been the result of a wonderful team effort and attention to detail in what we produce. We rear our own free-range pigs, breeding quality and maintaining this quality right through to the end product.
“I am chuffed to bits that we won trophies for every sausage category that we entered!” Martin’s champion sausage included Greenfield free-range pork, Loosehanger cheese and local watercress.
Tim Brock, Hampshire Fare manager said: “The Great Hampshire Sausage Competition is important for Hampshire’s livestock farmers because these local butchers are using their meat. It’s also important for the high street – by using local butchers you can find out what meat is in the product, where it’s come from and how it was reared”.
Presenting the awards, Hampshire County Councillor Jonathan Glen, executive member for economic development said: “The competition was a resounding success, and highlights the quality of products made by Hampshire’s independent butchers and livestock farmers. I hope that these results will encourage more people to buy their meat direct from Hampshire’s independent butchers, farm shops and at Hampshire farmers’ markets.”
