The Environment Agency and Met Office said there was a danger of flooding this weekend and early next week after a week of up to three inches of rainfall.
More heavy rain on already wet ground across the county and the Isle of Wight could lead to potential flooding from rivers, the Environment Agency said. There could be flooding from run-off and drains unable to cope with the increased volumes of water.
Strong winds, heavy rainfall and high tides forecast for early next week could also increase the risk of flooding along the coastline.
Andrew Gilham, flood and coastal risk manager for the Environment Agency’s southern region, said: “Now is an ideal time for anyone living in an area vulnerable to flooding to think about the steps they can take to protect their properties.
“By taking simple precautions we can limit the damage a flood can leave behind.”
The Met Office gave a “moderate risk” of severe weather.
Chief forecaster Richard Young, said: “After the wet weather this week we are expecting more heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, over southern England on Sunday.”
