A VAN driver has been questioned by police following a New Forest crash which claimed the life of a middle-aged cyclist.

Police said the 53-year-old victim had been riding his bicycle along Fawley Road, Fawley, when he was struck by a white Mercedes Sprinter van travelling in the same direction.

The collision, which happened near the village centre at 11.10pm on Saturday, knocked the cyclist from his bike.

Police said the man, who has not yet been named, was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he died shortly afterwards.

The van driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol. He was being questioned by police yesterday.

Police said the name and details of the cyclist would not be made public until his next of kin had been traced and informed.

Traffic police have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses.

Investigating officers are keen to hear from anyone who was using the Fawley Road around the time of the crash, particularly anyone who saw the collision or noticed the van immediately beforehand.
