THERE could well be an unexpected reprieve for Hamble ASSC, whose 4-2 defeat at Bemerton Heath Harlequins on Saturday seemingly ended their 18-year stay in the top flight of the Sydenhams Wessex League.

The Planemakers could yet be toasting Lymington & New Milton's championship success if it results in promotion for the Linnets. That's because there is no Ryman or Southern League club to come back down and that could result in only Downton dropping into Division 2.

But there's also some possible bad news for Hamble. Their manager Danny Bowers has been approached by BAT as a replacement for Andy Leader, who is now managing SWL rivals Christchurch.

"They've asked to speak to me and I will do so, but I need a break away with my family first," confirmed Bowers. "It's going to be a tough decision as Hamble gave me the opportunity to move into first-team management."

Richard Morse's near-post header on 48 minutes cancelled out Ian Chalk's first-half opener for Bemerton before strikes by Chalk, Neil Cole and Adam Nash put Harlequins 4-1 ahead before Ross Bottomley netted a late consolation.

Portland United's Division 1 status was secured by schoolboy Lewis Whyton who became the youngest ever player to score a SWL Division 1 hat-trick when he netted all three goals in the Dorset club's 3-2 success at Fareham, who replied through Danny Turner and Dean Blake.

With Gosport losing, Thatcham Town snatched third spot after goals by Danny Sullivan (2), Sean Cook and Ian Davies wrapped up a 4-1 home win against VTFC, whose consolation cane from Ben Tyrell.

"Third place in my first year in charge is very pleasing," beamed Thatcham boss Jason Braidwood, whose side face Hamworthy United in today's SWL Cup final at Hurn Bridge (3pm).

Strikes by Justin Bennett (2), Phil Andrews and Peter Kingham saw Andover triumph 4-1 over Cowes, who had led through Ollie Buckett, while a Stuart Cannie brace helped Wimborne home 2-0 at AFC Newbury.

Relegated Downton finished on a high note by thumping Alton Town 5-2 at Wick Lane, Mark Daubney and Daniel Gain both notched doubles with Matt Guy completing the Robins' nap hand.
