POLICE are warning New Forest residents to be on their guard after a man was arrested on suspicion of trying to scam people for sponsorship money.
The suspect is believed to have been operating door-to-door in the Totton area for some time. Police believe he used various guises and often presented himself as having some form of disability.
Ron Smith, crime reduction officer at Lyndhurst, said: "It is unlikely that he is the only criminal using this approach. I would urge members of the public to be on their guard against this and not to hand over cash to anyone they are not sure about."
The suspect has been bailed until May 25 pending further inquiries
