If the people of Romsey were surprised to see the national flag of Italy flying alongside those of St George and the Union Jack at the Town Hall last weekend, it was because the Italians were in town.
A high-powered delegation from Treviglio accompanied their mayor, Giorgio Zordan, on an exploratory visit as part of the process of establishing a possible twinning link between Romsey and the town in northern Italy.
At a civic reception in the Town Hall on Saturday morning a large gathering witnessed the exchange of gifts and speeches from both sides.
After a "home-produced" lunch the Italian party enjoyed a stroll around the town and a guided tour of Romsey Abbey.
The highlight of the evening was a spirited performance of The Gondoliers at the Plaza - with the Italian element in one of the songs much appreciated.
On Sunday morning, lunch was arranged at Jermyns House in the Hillier Gardens, where a delicious 'Best of Hampshire' menu was served. Most of the visitors then opted for a tour of Winchester Cathedral where they were also able to enjoy some of the music of evensong.
By the end of the buffet supper, arranged by the Italian proprietor of Keats' Restaurant in Ampfield, new friendships had been forged, so the singing of Auld Lang Syne seemed wholly apt.
A 12-strong delegation from Romsey, to include the new mayor-elect, Jill Gethin, will visit Treviglio from May 27th-30th.
