AFTER a promising start the fortunes of a Winchester accountant have taken a downward turn in the Arctic.
David Aston, 35, is taking part in one of the toughest challenges on earth, the Polar Race 2005.
After the first leg of the 350-mile slog David's team Northern Stars were in the lead as they raced from north-east Canada to the North Pole.
As the end of the second leg approaches the team has slipped to fifth place some 18 miles behind the leaders.
Blizzards and whiteout conditions have slowed the progress of finishers, organisers said.
David, of Northbrook Avenue, St Giles Hill, described the first leg of the race, in which Northern Stars finished first, as an "awesome experience".
