TIDWORTH College is to be sold on the open market - but there will be constraints on what the building will be used for in future.

The college has been under a cloud in recent months following the announcement that Salisbury College is to relinquish its lease of the property.

Ownership of the site lies with the Royal British Legion which redeveloped the site in the mid-1990s to provide help to soldiers leaving the services under the Options for Change military cutbacks.

The building, on the site of former workshops used by the Americans during the Second World War, was opened by the Queen and includes some residential facilities as well as teaching rooms.

Kennet District Council's chief executive, Mark Boden, told a meeting of the Tidworth Community Area Partnership, that a steering group set up following the original pull-out announcement had met on a number of occasions.

The group wanted the building to continue as an educational centre which integrated and contributed to other activities taking place in Tidworth.

"I believe that subject to a number of legal matters the landowner will shortly be marketing the property," said Mr Boden.
