Winchester Chess Club is competing against rivals in America - but without leaving the city.
The club believes it may be the first in Hampshire to stage a match over the Internet with a foreign club. It is using free Internet facilities at the city's reference library to take on a club from Massachusetts tomorrow.
The four members who will test their skills against the Winchester Epiphany Chess Club are: Khaled Esmet, David Kinsler, Michael White and Bob Cleave.
Winchester Chess Club has 15 members and meets every Monday in the Winchester Conservative Club. They have representatives in three divisions in the Southampton league.
Mr Kinsler, club secretary, said: "We are all looking forward to it and it is arousing a lot of interest. We hope it will raise the profile of the club."
Yinnon Ezra, county council director of recreation and heritage, said: "This is an excellent opportunity for the club to forge new links with overseas clubs and we are pleased that one of our libraries is able to give both clubs their first experience of competing online."
