AN ancient tradition is being resurrected in Winchester for May Day.

Local musicians are offering the chance to hear May Day carols, traditionally sung to herald the start of spring.

The venue is unusual. It's at the top of the tower at Winchester Cathedral.

The event starts at 7.15am on bank holiday Monday, May 2. Music begins at 8am.

Musician and cathedral guide Reg Fletcher, together with a group of adult singers, will be performing the songs.

Following the concert there will be a visit to the bell chamber, ringing chamber and a walk inside the roof space.

This is a one-off event and places are limited to 12. Pre-booking is essential.

Chris Tulk, co-ordinator of the tower tours, said: "You will see stunning views from the top of the tower.

"Winchester in her early summer dress is a sight worth an early start."

The summer season of tower tours starts on May 30, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays at 2.15pm and 11.30am on Saturdays.

The tour is open to anyone aged of 12 to 70.
