OWNERS of mopeds and motorbikes in part of Southampton are being warned to make sure their machines are as secure as possible, or risk having them stolen.
The advice comes after a spate of thefts in the past two weeks in the east of the city, mainly in Bitterne and Townhill Park.
Five machines have been stolen so far, only two of which were recovered.
Some of the bikes were chained and locked but were left in drives or gardens.
Thieves also stole tools and bicycles from sheds in the same area.
In addition there have been a number of thefts of satellite navigation systems and speed trap detectors from cars.
Insp Steve Latham of Bitterne police said: "Car crime generally is going down in Southampton, but there has been a spate on the eastern side of the city recently.
"I would urge owners to be more security-conscious.
"Mopeds and motorbikes really need to be secured with large chains, preferably more than one.
"If it's at all possible, they should be put in a garage or out of sight, especially at night.
"Also, secure your sheds and garages and remove anything of value from your car when you get out.
"If you do see anything suspicious, please contact us so we can check it out."
