LAWRENCE DODD took route 66 - twice! - to win the Hampshire Hog at North Hants, Fleet, on Sunday. The international from Thetford, Norfolk won by three shots.
He matched Gary Wolstenholme's record of 2002 and joined such luminaries as Justin Rose, Steve Richardson and Sandy Lyle on the honours board.
Dodd's five-birdie morning round put him one shot adrift of Stoneham's Ryan Henley, winner of the Selborne Salver the previous day.
Henley's mighty effort set a new amateur record and was the product of an astonishing front nine of 30, with birdies at the second, third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth holes. His card read 3,3,4,3,4,3,3,3,4!
Unsurprisingly, he could not maintain such blistering form and was home in a more mundane 35.
Henley ended up with a 135 total, the same score as Gary Boyd, from Northants County.
Fourth was Steve Benson (Wentworth), with 69, 67, a shot clear of Max French (RAC), on 66, 71, while Martin Young (Brokenhurst Manor), who was out in 31, returned a second 69.
Sixteen-year-old Sam Hutsby (Lee-on-the-Solent) was twice round in 72, rivalling senior Hampshire colleagues Sam Boyes (Stoneham), 73, 69; Mark Thistleton (Hayling) 74, 71 and Jon Young (Brokenhurst Manor) 73, 73.
Henley claimed the Hampshire Salver for best four-round aggregate over the weekend, with scores of 137 and 135 for a 272 total, an average of 68 per round.
