AIR Cadet, Chris Sawdon, from South Wonston, near Winchester, has been selected for a place on an expedition to East Africa.
The 18-year-old will join a team of 30 cadets from the Sea, Air and Army Corps in the first joint venture of its kind.
The trip will begin with a journey up Mount Kilimanjaro.
Then Chris and his companions will be asked to undertake a community project before setting off on a safari.
It is part of a Cadet Forces scheme to set new challenges for today's youth.
The national selection process started last July and involved gruelling physical tests and mental stamina. As well as assault courses and group exercises, the applicants had to pass theoretical and planning tests.
The trip is scheduled for this summer but, for many of the participants, who have to raise £1,500 towards their expenses, the adventure has already begun.
During half-term, Chris and the other cadets were taken on a week-long mountain trip to the Lake District. Their preparation will also include a series of rigorous physical training sessions in the month before departure.
Chris says he is delighted to have been chosen: "I've always wanted to go on an adventurous expedition and experience new parts of the world. The Joint Service Expedition has given me the opportunity. After this I will join the Armed Forces and hopefully travel on more adventurous expeditions."
