SAINTS legend Danny Wallace has been forced to shelve his bid to compete in this year's London Marathon.
The 41-year-old former ex-Manchester United and England winger suffers from multiple sclerosis and was planning to walk the gruelling 26-mile course in around four days.
Wallace, though, who can get exhausted walking just 100 yards with a stick, has been advised to pull out.
"Maybe I was a bit naive in thinking I could do it in four days after such a short build-up," he said.
"I rushed into it a little bit and my training hasn't been to the standard I would have liked, so I have listened to the advice of my doctors and decided to pull out.
"It is disappointing and I feel as though I am letting people down but I definitely intend to compete next year, by which time I will have had chance to prepare properly."
Wallace, who spent a decade at Saints and created history when he lined up alongside brothers Ray and Rodney, still has the ambition to eventually complete the famous marathon course and will continue fund-raising for MS.
He added: "I want to do something to raise awareness of MS as well as raising money. Hopefully I can build myself up over the next year and have a real go at completing the marathon."
