IMAGES of Winchester at war are needed for an exhibition to be held in the Great Hall this summer.

The county council is seeking memorabilia, photographs and newspaper clippings which tell the tale of the city in wartime.

The exhibition will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The city was bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1943 and with several local bases was an important military town.

The organisers are particularly interested in documenting food and clothes rationing, make do and mend, war work for women, the Home Guard, the Land Army and preparations for D-Day.

This local display will be shown in the Great Hall from June 16 to July 23, alongside the 'Their Past Your Future' exhibition, a touring Imperial War Museum show.

Anyone who has images or clippings which help paint a picture of wartime Winchester should either e-mail them to the.great.hall@hants.gov.uk or take them directly to the Great Hall so that copies can be made.

Otherwise, people are asked to send photocopies of images or documents and any relevant information to: Christine Beresford, C/O Hannah Madeley, The Great Hall, Winchester, Hampshire, S023 8UL.
