ONE of the most historic pubs in Hampshire aims to reopen by the May Day Bank Holiday following a £250,000 refit.

The Bugle, which has been an alehouse since the 1500s, is being sensitively restored into a gastro-pub by a Southampton-based business.

Ideal Leisure bought the freehold for an undisclosed six-figure sum from Totton-based Linden Homes last month.

Linden had to retain the pub after bowing to pressure from villagers over plans to turn the waterfront site at Hamble into 14 luxury homes.

Locals insisted the hostelry - famous around the world in sailing circles - should remain as part of the controversial redevelopment.

Ideal Leisure, which employs 40 full-time staff and 60 part-timers, has a portfolio that includes some of Southampton's most popular entertainment venues. They include the Lizard Lounge, Apartment 26, White Star Tavern and Dining Rooms and La Cantina.

Matt Boyle, the 34-year-old managing director of Ideal Leisure, said of The Bugle: "We really want to turn it into a great pub, where someone can come in for a pint and a pie, or enjoy a meal with wine.

"We are taking it back to its roots - an establishment at the heart of the community.

"We feel quite privileged to have such local history in our portfolio - it's a real jewel in the crown."

Matt, who founded the Rhino Club, a student nightspot in Southampton, said The Bugle is expected to be up and running by May 2.

The refit, financed by both Ideal Leisure and Bank of Scotland, will see flagstone floors, a solid oak bar and real fireplaces. Linden also spent £150,000 renovating the Grade II listed property.
