POLICE are hunting two men who talked their way into an 85-year-old's house at Weeke in Winchester.

They called at her property in Bereweeke Road at around 3.45pm on Thursday in last week. She allowed them in after they asked to borrow a pen and paper and they talked to her for around 20 minutes.

After they had gone, she noticed that some rooms had been searched, although nothing was taken.

"I feel a bit stupid now. I have a chain fitted to the front door and I could have prevented this happening had I used it," she added.

Detectives believe that, an hour before the men called at her house, they had also visited a warden-assisted property in nearby Bereweeke Avenue.

One man kept a resident talking at the front door while his accomplice entered the warden's office and a mobile phone and a wallet, containing cash and credit cards, were taken. DC Steve Legg, who is investigating both cases, is warning pensioners not to let suspicious visitors into their homes.

"If you are concerned about the reasons given by any uninvited callers then ring the police immediately. They could try the same trick on someone else.

"You may think that you are wasting our time but you are not, for the earlier that we are made aware, the more chance we have of identifying the offender."

Police have released e-fits and descriptions of the suspects, who are both white, 5ft 6in and in their 20s.

The first has mousey hair, stubble and a slim build and wore light trousers and a light grey overcoat. The second has dark eyes and black curly hair, a round chubby face, and medium build. He wore a navy-blue anorak. Ring DC Legg at Winchester police station on 0845-0454545 if you think you can help.
