AS A former defender, Eastleigh's director of football Mark Dennis gleaned more satisfaction than most from Saturday's 0-0 home draw with Braintree.

But the ex-Saints full-back was honest enough to admit: "It wouldn't have had the neutrals purring."

Play-off rivals Braintree arrived at the Sparshatts Stadium boasting the best defensive record in the league and what pleased Dennis most was Eastleigh's ability to match their rearguard strength.

He said: "Defensively we were superb. I don't normally single players out, but Chris Collins was magnificent. We've gone 11 games unbeaten now and only conceded four goals. The back four deserve a lot of credit for the way they've worked and trained.

"I have to say though that, overall, we were second best on the day. Not by a lot, but we didn't click in midfield and up front.

"Braintree were strong and physical in the middle of the park and we found it hard to come to terms with that. They've also got the meanest defence - and you can see why."

In a game of few chances, Eastleigh keeper Wayne Shaw saved well from Alex Ravell while, at the other end, Ryan Ashford hit the post.

Dennis thought Eastleigh striker Paul Sales was going to clinch a precious victory when he broke through one-on-one in the second half, but the pony-tailed marksman was denied by keeper Danny Gay.

With three games left Eastleigh are still third in the table, two points behind Billericay who have two games in hand. Braintree are two points adrift of Eastleigh in fourth, while Yeading now look dead certs for the championship thanks to a 2-0 home win over Northwood.

Dennis acknowledged: "Yeading deserve the title. They've been a credit to the Ryman League. But for us to finish third would be a great achievement - or we might even manage second yet.

"We need another win to get us into the play-offs and after that it becomes a lottery, but it's a lovely lottery to be in.

"After back-to-back promotions, this has been another phenomenal season for the club."
