Idlewild, Southampton Guildhall

FALLING out of love usually takes months, even years.

You wake up one day and realise the feelings have gone and you don't know when or why.

But I know exactly the moment when my love for Idlewild evaporated.

It was halfway through their self-indulgent ten-minute guitar interlude.

When you go to a gig of a band you've seen several times before and all of whose albums you own you expect to be in for a treat. Sadly Idlewild did little but disappoint at their Southampton gig.

The concert had its moments. Idlewild did play some great tracks, including guaranteed crowd-pleasers When I Argue I See Shapes, Little Discourage and These Wooden Ideas.

But overall they failed to pull off the kind of exhilarating live performance that has been their trademark up to now.

Idlewild have been accused of trying to become a stadium rock band and their lengthy musical interludes backed this theory up.

However, their attempt to appeal to a broader audience just resulted in boring their current one.

Let's hope they're back on track by the time they come to Hampshire again.
