A YOUNG stray dog left for dead after a hit-and-run in Hedge End is now looking for a new home after making a remarkable recovery.

Poppy, pictured with Andrew House, was taken to the West End's Blue Cross Animal Welfare Centre after being found lying in Grange Road, Hedge End, by an RSPCA inspector.

Animal welfare officers saved the badly injured whippet cross after her leg was badly broken in the incident.

As her condition was so serious she was taken to London's Victoria Animal Hospital where she had an operation to reconstruct her broken leg.

She now has metal plates and screws under her skin to help her walk.

The Blue Cross Animal Welfare Centre's deputy manager Lara Alford said: "She has a lovely temperament. She's sweet and very laid-back.

"She will have to come back for a couple of X-rays but she is expected to make a full recovery with no long-term damage. She will need a three-month rest period with restricted exercise.

"Poppy needs to go to a quiet home with people around most of the time and older children."
