WIGHTLINK Islanders got their home Premier Trophy campaign off to a winning start with a 54-39 win over Kings Lynn Stars from Norfolk at Smallbrook last night.
The visitors were very much a two-man team but the Islanders were a complete outfit and produced spectacular racing for the fans.
Superbly led by skipper Craig Boyce, the home side always seemed to have control.
The Australian was backed up by Jason Bunyan (11), Danish pair Ulrich Ostergaard (9) and Steen Jensen (9) and Krister Marsh (7).
Boyce won heat one as the home side started with a 4-2 and, when Jensen burst through from the back in the second, they were six up.
Marsh won the third and a big win looked on, but the Stars hit back through Oliver Allen and Tomas Topinka.
Boyce won the race of the night in the sixth with a breathtaking sweep around the outside of both Lynn riders on turn four, before Bunyan and the superb Jensen slammed home a 5-1 in the seventh to make it 28-17.
Lynn responded with a 5-1 of their own in the eighth but the Islanders had built a seven-point cushion with two heats remaining, and Ostergaard and Boyce both claimed wins.
IOW: Boyce 13, Hauzinger 1, Marsh 7, Ostergaard 9+1, Bunyan 11+2, Jensen 9+2, Doyle 4+2.
Kings Lynn: Topinka 14, Brundle 3, Doolan 7, Allott 1+1, Allen 7, Jaros 6+2, Jones 1+1.
