A CORNER of a Hedge End churchyard is set to be transformed into a wildlife haven and peace garden.
Clearance of the overgrown forest of weeds in part of the St John's churchyard starts on Saturday.
A task force from the local community hopes that by the end of the project the garden will be full of sweet- smelling flowers, attracting butterflies and bees. It will feature a horseshoe-shaped boardwalk as well as a pond and marshes.
Construction of the boardwalk will begin this weekend as green-fingered members of the community get their hands dirty for a good cause. No graves will be affected by the development.
It is hoped volunteers can build a nature trail towards the end of the project for local school children and groups to enjoy.
The church has received a grant from Eastleigh Council to get work under way and Hedge End's 5th Girl Guide group has also raised money for the garden. The mayor will present a cheque for £500 on April 23 at the church. If you would like to help, call 01489 783204.
