WINCHESTER detectives are hunting for these two men after two pensioners were targeted in distraction burglaries.

The men called at a sheltered home in Bereweeke Road and one kept a 62-year-old resident talking while the other stole a wallet and mobile phone from the warden's office.

Later on in the day, two men called at another house in Bereweeke Road and asked the 85-year-old owner for a pen and paper. The pensioner, who has asked not to be named, let the men into her home, where they stayed talking to her for about 20 minutes.

Later the woman found drawers and doors open in her house although nothing was taken.

She said: "I feel a bit stupid - I have a chain fitted to the front door and I could have prevented this from happening had I used it.

"I don't feel too bad now, many good friends have rallied round and given me support.

"However when I walk into rooms it can be a little unnerving knowing that someone else has been in there going through my things. I'm just glad they didn't steal anything."

Both incidents happened last Thursday.

The first man is described as white, aged in his 20s, 5ft 6in, of slim build, with mousey hair, slight stubble and wearing light trousers and a light grey mac.

The second man is described as white, in his 20s, 5ft 6in, of medium build with black curly hair and dark eyes. He was wearing a navy blue anorak and was described as having a round chubby face and a jolly manner.

Det Con Steve Legg said: "Distraction burglary can be hugely distressing for the victims and we would advise everyone to take as many crime prevention measures as they can.

"These people are professionals and sadly they know exactly what to do to gain people's trust. If you are concerned about the reasons given by uninvited callers, call the police immediately. They could try the same trick on someone else."
