Sir.-I read with interest in The Gazette that the borough mayor, Councillor Gwen Richardson, is supporting The Gazette's St George's Day campaign and is holding her Charity Ball on the eve of April 23.
I send her my very best wishes for a successful and profitable event.
I recall when the late Cllr Roger Morris was mayor of the borough for the second time, from 1981 to 1982.
He was also patriotic and he and the mayoress, Sue, held a banquet to mark St George's Day in April 1982. This was a great success and raised a considerable sum for his particular charity.
I would add that the mayoress was particularly patriotic that evening as, at that time, Sue was eight-and-a-half months pregnant with her daughter - and fortunately she survived the evening very well indeed!
