Sir.-I would like to thank Hannah Williams for her response to the Top of the Town campaign article that was featured in The Gazette on Friday, March 18.
I agree that there is no harm in asking everyone to just use the name The Old Town, and, as town centre manager, I would encourage this wholeheartedly.
However, I am also keen that we do not take forever to resolve this and there will be no need for consultants in order to implement this name change.
What I would like to see is the traders taking action to commence The Old Town feel and look to this area.
I would like Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to start thinking about changing the street furniture to an old style. I would like to see more specialist shops in this area and more of a caf culture being adopted for the Top of the Town.
All of this would mean we could start to confidently justify and implement the renaming to The Old Town.
I am keen that Basingstoke starts to shake off its negative image across the region, as I feel it is unjustified.
This small but impactive change will help towards doing that, while assisting businesses and leisure operators such as the Haymarket at the same time.
-Kaye Cousins, town centre manager, Basingstoke.
