SAINTS fans from Hythe and the New Forest have thrown their weight behind the Daily Echo's campaign to save the town's threatened ferry service from the axe.
As scores of fans made their way to Southampton's home game with Premiership leaders Chelsea, they queued to sign our petition which aims to stop the Hythe Ferry service from closing.
Hundreds of fans from Hythe and other New Forest towns choose to travel by the ferry to Saints home games at St Mary's Friends Provident Stadium in Southampton.
They warned that if the ferry service closes, they will be forced to use their cars to drive in to Southampton - adding to the city's parking problems on match days.
Fan Pete Jordan, 41, from East Boldre said: "It is by far the easiest way of getting to Southampton from this side of the water.
"It would be a real shame if we lost it. It is cheaper to come over on the ferry than to drive round and park. It is a shame that more people don't use it."
Katie Bidmead from Hythe added: "I always use the ferry. It would be really difficult if it was not here. Buses are not really available."
Ferry bosses fear they may be forced to axe the service if they are made to foot the bill for a staggering 740 per cent business rate increase.
It would cost owner White Horse Ferries thousands of extra pounds to run the ferry link which is already heavily subsidised by local taxpayers.
Our petition to save the ferry already boasts about 700 signatures and is growing by the day.
